The stones whisper tales. They speak of centuries passed. Here before you stands Lobkovice Castle. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living testament to a family’s enduring legacy.

Lobkovice Castle a small Gothic castle is much more than meets the eye. It has witnessed history unfold for over six centuries. Originally a fortified manor house it was transformed into a Renaissance and Baroque chateau. This happened through various renovations and rebuilds throughout its history.

First mentioned in 1341 Lobkovice belonged to Mikuláš Cotr. Later it became the property of Jan Luč of Zásada. Then Mikuláš Chudý of Dýjezd acquired it. He was the founder of the House of Lobkowicz. He significantly modified the local fortress. With a few exceptions Lobkovice remained in Lobkowicz family ownership until the 19th century. A Prague attorney Jan Měchura purchased it then. He was the father-in-law of the renowned historian František Palacký. Palacký stayed in Lobkovice between 1852 and 1860. He is even buried there. Prince Mořic of Lobkowicz reacquired the family seat a few years later. The socialist government nationalized the estate in 1948. This was a consequence of the land reform bill passed in 1947. The castle was returned to Prince Ferdinand Joseph Lobkowicz after the Velvet Revolution. He was the grandson of the last pre-1948 owner.

The castle itself has endured much. The Thirty Years’ War brought looting and neglect. It wasn’t until 1679 under Prince Ferdinand August of Lobkovice that significant repairs and rebuilding began. Italian architect Antonio della Porta designed the renovations. Later Jan Měchura oversaw further renovations in 1829. The castle has seen many changes in ownership and use. It even served as a study center and library depository for Charles University.

Today the castle belongs to the Lobkowicz family. It remains closed to the public pending the completion of its reconstruction. But even from the outside you can feel the weight of history. You can imagine the lives lived within these walls. The stories whispered by the very stones themselves. Lobkovice Castle is a place that truly embodies the passage of time. A testament to resilience and the enduring spirit of a remarkable family and a captivating piece of Prague’s heritage.
