Before you stretches a testament to São Paulo’s layered history the Arcos do Jânio. These arches are also known as Arcos do Bixiga or Arcos da Rua Jandaia. They stand near Avenida 23 de Maio.

The Arcos do Jânio are now an important monument. They gained official recognition in 2002. The Conselho Municipal de Preservação do Patrimônio Histórico protects them. They remind us of the Italian community in Bixiga. Bixiga is known for its Italian culture.

Time warp back to the early 20th century. The Arcos do Jânio weren’t built as a monument. In 1908, the city approved a construction project. Most of the work happened between 1911 and 1913. The parapet was finished around 1921. The Arcos do Jânio became a retaining wall. It supported the difference in height between Rua Jandaia and Rua da Assembleia.

Over time, buildings hid the Arcos do Jânio from view. These structures covered the 220-meter wall. They made it hard to see the arches from the street. This happened for about sixty years. Then in 1987, the city tore down the buildings. This was during Jânio Quadros’ time as mayor. The Arcos do Jânio were revealed again.

Stories about the Arcos do Jânio are full of gaps and myths. Many think Calabrian artisans built them in the 19th century. These artisans supposedly made the bricks themselves. This is why many see them as a cultural landmark. In 1992, the city named the area “Praça dos Artesãos Calabreses”. This honored the builders.

But the bricks of Arcos do Jânio weren’t handmade by Italian artisans. Official documents tell a different story. Companies like Companhia Paulista de Tijolos Calcareos supplied materials. The city publication Melhoramentos da Capital said the wall had concrete. It also used sílico-calcário bricks.

The Arcos do Jânio project faced delays. It was supposed to finish in 1913. But citizens complained about the slow progress. The paving was done in 1915. The parapet likely finished in 1921.

The area around the Arcos do Jânio changed. By the 1930s, buildings blocked the arches. Only in the 1960s did the area get attention again. A city project aimed to improve Avenida 23 de Maio. This led to the city taking over properties near the Arcos do Jânio.

In the 1980s, many families lived in the buildings near the Arcos do Jânio. The city studied the situation. But officials didn’t know the Arcos do Jânio existed. In 1984, the area became a special zone. This was meant to protect the buildings.

Jânio Quadros became mayor in 1985. He had a plan to redevelop the area. This led to protests. Some wanted to save the buildings. Others wanted new development. In 1987, Quadros got approval to remove the protection status. Families were moved to new homes.

Demolition revealed the Arcos do Jânio. People wondered about their origin. Officials thought they were from the 19th century. They believed Europeans built them with imported bricks. Later studies showed the Arcos do Jânio dated from 1911 to 1913. They were made of concrete and sílico-calcários bricks.

Despite the facts, a romantic story took hold. People believed Italian artisans built the arches. This version is still popular today.

In 1988, the new access to Avenida 23 de Maio opened. The Arcos do Jânio became a landmark. Experts criticized the demolition. They saw it as a loss of history.

In 2002, the city protected the Arcos do Jânio. They recognized their historical value. Today, the Arcos do Jânio are a symbol of Bixiga. They are part of São Paulo’s identity.

As you stand here remember the Arcos do Jânio are more than just a structure. They represent the city’s past. They show how stories can change over time. The Arcos do Jânio connect us to the Italian community. They remind us of the people who lived here before.
