The story of Rehoboth Baptist Church is deeply intertwined with the history of Washington D.C. itself. Founded in 1864 it stands as one of the ten oldest Black Baptist churches in the city. Its origins trace back to a group of former slaves. They sought a place to worship near their homes.
These believers initially gathered in Sister Hannah Johnson’s home. They held prayer and praise services. Mr. J.D. Blackford a white citizen taught the neighborhood children to read. Sister Hannah led Bible study.
After the Civil War General Oliver O. Howard played a crucial role. He secured the old Army barracks on First Street. It became their place of worship. General Howard was also instrumental in founding Howard University. He served as its President from 1869 to 1874.
The congregation moved from the barracks to a church building. They erected it on the same grounds in 1870. Reverend Henry Baylor became the first ordained pastor. Rehoboth was officially recognized as a church.
Over the years various pastors have led Rehoboth. Each made significant contributions. Pastor Harry Lee Coleman organized the first choir. Pastor John Richards started the Missionary Society and the first Usher Board.
Pastor Elijah Coleman burned the church mortgage. He installed electric lights. Pastor A. H. S. Johnson ordained 32 ministers. He started the Day Care.
In April 1969 under Pastor J. Edward Lewis Rehoboth purchased property. It was located at 621 Alabama Avenue SE. This became their home for 46 years.
Pastor R. V. Palmer II re-instituted Christian Education and Bible Study. He instituted the Boy Scouts the Girl Scouts and the Men’s and Women’s Ministries. He also oversaw the Mortgage Burning and the installation of the elevator.
In February 2015 Pastor Curtis L. Staley was elected. He became the ninth pastor. He is having a positive impact especially on the young people.
