Reflecting the sun’s rays, the Generations Mosaic Mural stretches before us, a vibrant testament to community and art. This isn’t just a wall. It’s a story etched in tile, glass, and the collective spirit of Santa Fe.

The Generations Mosaic Mural, conceived by artist Julie Deery, began as a vision to transform a forgotten space. Deery sought to connect Santa Feans and beautify an overlooked entrance to the city. Today, the mural spans 130 feet long and six feet high, a colorful panorama along the Rail Trail.

Imagine the scene. A rising sun over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. A blue sky teeming with birds. A groundscape alive with thoughts, humor, and quotes. Dog walkers pause here. Runners take a breather. Cyclists and train passengers on the Rail Runner Express are captivated by its beauty.

Deery’s vision was multi-faceted. She wanted to brighten the scenery for commuters and tourists. She aimed to provide an artistic outlet for residents. She desired to build a community founded on creativity, beauty, and hope.

Over 1,000 volunteers have contributed to this masterpiece. Each person laid a piece of tile or glass. They created a clay quote or figure. They helped grout and polish tiles. Some set up the shade tent, while others donated materials or funds. Many simply stopped to admire the mural’s progress.

The Generations Mosaic Mural incorporates wisdom from elders, the joy of children, and the dedication of countless hands. Pop-up mandala-making tables were held across the city. These events took place at the Santa Fe Art Walk, Vital Spaces, Santa Fe Brewing Company concerts, and local schools.

Embedded within the wall are clay tablets bearing quotes in English, Spanish, and Navajo. These words come from F. Scott Momaday, Alice Walker, and even an anonymous schoolchild. One quote simply states, “Protect our beautiful land.” Clay birds soar above silver Milagros, saint medals, bicycle chainrings, and pieces of jewelry. These glimmer in the sunlight.

Deery has relied on private donations and her own funds, receiving no grants for the Generations Mosaic Mural project. She uses primarily recycled materials, dedicating three days a week to her work. This includes braving the hottest summer days and the coldest mornings.

Interestingly, even local unhoused people have contributed to the mural’s creation. They often thank Deery for enhancing the area’s beauty. Some stay for hours, quietly helping and sharing their stories.

The artist used mesh for laying up elements in advance. For outdoor murals, it’s crucial to apply glue carefully to avoid water damage. Proper grouting and sealing are essential for longevity.

Julie Deery’s Generations Mosaic Mural stands as a powerful symbol. It represents what a community can create together. It showcases art’s ability to transform space and lives. As you observe this mural, consider the countless stories embedded within each piece of tile.
