Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Kodaira Furusato Mura stands the old Ogawa family residence’s Magistrate’s Office, or as it’s known in Japanese, the Kyu-Ogawa-ke Jutaku Genkan-kaku. This seemingly unassuming structure whispers tales of power, influence, and the shaping of Kodaira itself. The Ogawa family weren’t just residents; they were key players in the development of both the old Kodaira Village and the newer Kodaira Shinmachi Village during the Edo period. They held the prestigious title of “name-holders,” granted by the shogunate, giving them significant authority. This authority wasn’t limited to village administration. The Ogawas also held policing rights, controlled taxation, and even had the power to approve building permits, largely due to the area being the hunting grounds of the falconer’s guild. The Magistrate’s Office is one of the only remaining structures from the Ogawa family compound. It’s connected to the main house by a covered walkway. Its design, similar to a ceremonial platform, or shikidai, features a “genkan no ma” or entrance room, and a “tsukae no ma,” a reception room for servants. The Magistrate’s Office was completed on May 25, 1805, after a relatively short construction period starting on March 13 of the same year. It boasts a unique architectural style, different from typical name-holder residences. This unique design, with its thatched hipped-gable roof and ornate details, showcases the Ogawa family’s high status. It reflects their significant power and influence during the Edo period. The Ogawa family’s story is inextricably linked to Kodaira’s history, and this building stands as a testament to their legacy. It’s a tangible piece of the past, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who shaped this region centuries ago. This office isn’t just a building; it’s a portal to Kodaira’s past.
