“Greetings from Stuttgart!” A Bulgarian voice echoes through the city. We are standing before Heilige Kiril und Methodi. This church is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith, resilience, and community.
Heilige Kiril und Methodi wasn’t always Bulgarian Orthodox. It was once a Catholic Church named St. Boniface. For six years, the Bulgarian Orthodox community rented St. Boniface. In June 2023, with support from the Bulgarian government, they purchased it.
Imagine Bulgarians in Stuttgart. About 10,000 call this city home. Around 40,000 live in Baden-Württemberg. Heilige Kiril und Methodi offers them a spiritual and cultural anchor. It is a place to celebrate their heritage. It is a place to practice their faith.
Pause for a moment. Consider the history held within these walls. The church was built in 1934. That was during the rise of Nazism. It’s remarkable because churches faced persecution then. Heilige Kiril und Methodi stands as a symbol of defiance against oppression. It is a place of worship constructed in times of adversity.
In March 2024, Heilige Kiril und Methodi was officially consecrated as a Bulgarian Orthodox church. The consecration was led by Metropolitan Anthony of Western and Central Europe. Metropolitan Nikolai of Plovdiv also took part in the special ceremony. Relics of St. Boniface and the New Martyrs of Batak were placed inside the altar. This act connects the church to both local and Bulgarian saints.
Inside Heilige Kiril und Methodi, the Divine Liturgy unfolded on the newly consecrated altar table. Representatives from Serbian, Greek, Russian, and Romanian parishes in Stuttgart attended the event. The Embassy of Bulgaria in Berlin hopes this church will become a center for Bulgarian culture and traditions.
Today, Heilige Kiril und Methodi continues to thrive. It serves as a vibrant hub for Bulgarians in Stuttgart. It is a place where faith and heritage intertwine. This church is more than bricks and mortar. It embodies the enduring spirit of a community. It stands as a beacon of hope and tradition.
