Have you ever felt the tranquility of a hidden lake nestled within a bustling city? Welcome to Lago das Carpas a true oasis in São Paulo. This isn’t just any lake. Lago das Carpas is a stunning jewel within the vast Cantareira State Park. It’s tucked away in the Águas Claras Nucleus actually closer to Mairiporã than São Paulo itself.
Imagine the journey to reach this secluded haven. The trail starts at the end of Rua do Horto a paved road that leads to Pedra Grande. But Lago das Carpas lies beyond. The paved path ends and a more rugged trail begins. This trail is about 3 kilometers from the Pedra Grande trailhead. It’s a mixture of flat sections and gentle inclines. You’ll walk among stones and gravel then later on through dry clay. There are even two stone pathways on either side of a Single Trail for vehicles.
The second ascent is near the boundary between São Paulo and Mairiporã. This ascent leads to a long descent. It will lead you to two more trails. Ignore the one on the right with the “no entry” sign. The left trail leads to Lago das Carpas itself. The round trip is almost 15 kilometers making it great for a beginner’s trail run.
Upon arriving at Lago das Carpas you’ll be met with a beautiful sight. The lake is at an altitude of approximately 985 meters. It’s surrounded by diverse flora with native Atlantic Rainforest trees. There’s a small porch a playground and picnic tables for your enjoyment. The water may look murky but it reflects the surrounding landscape like a mirror. You might even spot small fish in the shallows.
The area is also remarkably well-supplied with water. There is a drinking fountain right by the lake a bonus for hikers and runners looking to refill their water bottles. It’s more than just a scenic view it’s a chance to replenish and revitalize. Lago das Carpas is more than just a destination it’s an experience. It’s a reminder that even amidst the chaos of a city there is always a place of serenity and wonder waiting to be discovered. So take a moment to breathe in the fresh air and appreciate the beauty of Lago das Carpas.
