Did you know that the Igreja Sao Pedro Apostolo’s cornerstone was laid long before its official parish establishment?
We stand before the Igreja Sao Pedro Apostolo a testament to faith and community in Sao Paulo. This beautiful church wasn’t built overnight. Its story begins not in 1926 when the parish was officially created but much earlier in 1914. That’s when construction on the church building commenced thanks to the dedication of several individuals including Eduardo Vicente de Azevedo and his wife Elisa Vidigal. Their efforts along with those of Joao Franco and Manoel Moraes Pontes laid the foundation for what we see today. They chose Sao Pedro Saint Peter as the patron saint a tribute to Pedro Vicente de Azevedo. His wife Maria Amalia Lopes de Azevedo’s name even graces a street nearby a lasting legacy.
The parish’s official birth was in 1926 under Archbishop Duarte Leopoldo e Silva. Back then Tremembe was a much smaller place just 6000 residents spread across 72 square kilometers. The Igreja Sao Pedro Apostolo became the 25th parish in the Archdiocese of Sao Paulo. The church’s early years saw many dedicated priests and parishioners working tirelessly for its growth and community development. Father Cicero Revoredo the first priest to serve here began his tenure in January 1927.
Father Joao Bueno Goncalves succeeded him in 1929. His contributions included establishing the Santíssimo Chapel reorganizing the Apostolado da Oração and the Pia União which formed a parish choir. He also laid the groundwork for the Conferência Vicentina and the Congregação Mariana.
Later priests like Padre Eliseu Murai Padre Domingos Herculano Casarin and Padre Antonio Trivinho each added their unique mark. Padre Bruno Carra served for 33 years from 1956. He’s remembered for installing the stained glass windows a magnificent bell and a clock. He also played a vital role in establishing the Legião de Maria the Frederico Ozanan Shelter and the Pedro Apostolo Daycare Center.
Padre Geraldo Alves Pereira oversaw the major renovation of the church building. This is the structure that greets us today a reflection of his work. Following him Father Mauricio Luchini encouraged community involvement spearheaded projects and reopened the daycare center.
The Igreja Sao Pedro Apostolo continues its mission today. It is a reminder of the unwavering faith and collective effort that shaped this house of worship. Its beautiful structure and rich history make it a centerpiece of Sao Paulo’s cultural landscape. This church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith community and the enduring spirit of Tremembe.
