In 1950, the Faith Love Christian Herald Home was established. The Christian Children’s Fund founded it. This organization also established the Oasis Village for Children.
In 1971, the orphanage closed. It was symbolically sold to Suen Douh Camp for one dollar. Most of the original buildings were inherited from the orphanage. This gives the camp a sense of history.
The story goes that Pastor John Bechtel had a vision. He wanted to create a Christian orphanage in Hong Kong. He even spoke to the governor about acquiring land. But his request was denied.
One day, Pastor Bechtel found the perfect property for sale. Unfortunately, he couldn’t raise enough money to buy it. An American friend invited him to the United States to preach and raise funds.
After returning to Hong Kong, Pastor Bechtel received a letter. It contained a single dollar. A 14-year-old girl had donated her ice cream money. Her note read: “Please use this $1 to buy the camp.”
Touched by the girl’s generosity, Pastor Bechtel offered the dollar to the property owners. They were so moved by the girl’s letter that they agreed to sell the property for just one dollar. Thus, Suen Douh Camp was born.
Since its founding in 1971, Suen Douh Camp has welcomed countless children. Many young people have found faith within its grounds. The staff’s commitment to Christ has been the driving force. They share the gospel with the people of Hong Kong.
Camp-of-the-Woods has been a long-time partner. Many of their staff and guests have visited and worked at Suen Douh Camp. Campers usually stay for two nights. They hear the gospel in a peaceful setting. Local churches follow up with new believers.
Donations help unchurched children attend camp. They get to hear the gospel because of this support.
Sadly, Suen Douh Camp has faced challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic forced its closure in February 2020. Many gospel camps were canceled. Protests in the previous year had already reduced bookings.
