Perched within tranquil woods, Tokoji Temple offers a serene escape. Founded in 1691, this Obaku Zen Buddhist temple showcases a unique blend of Japanese and Chinese architectural styles.

Entering Tokoji, you’ll immediately notice the red, Chinese-style entrance gate. This vibrant gate signals the influence of Chinese design. The path leads to the Sanmon Gate, even larger than the first. An old bell tower stands nearby.

Did you know that Tokoji’s main hall houses a statue of Shaka Nyorai? The hall is a prime example of Chinese Zen architecture. Look closely at the roof tiles and you’ll spot the shachihoko gargoyles. They are another distinctive Chinese element.

But the story of Tokoji Temple goes beyond its architecture. Behind the temple lies the graveyard of half the Mori daimyo. These feudal lords governed from Hagi during the Edo Period. The odd-numbered lords found their final resting place here. The even-numbered lords are buried at Daishoin Temple. This division reflects a unique burial practice adopted from China.

Imagine the scene. Over 500 stone lanterns light the way. These lanterns were donated by loyal vassals. They create an ethereal atmosphere among the graves of the Mori clan. The graves include lords, their wives and children.

Notice the square granite pillars marking each grave. They stand about 4.4 meters tall. Each pillar displays the family crest. However, they lack the date of death.

Consider the large wooden fish hanging in the hallway. This wasn’t just decoration. Monks struck it to announce service and meal times.

Tokoji’s main gate represents the three Buddhist gates of emancipation. Each story embodies one of these gates. Take your time to appreciate the intricate details.

Tokoji Temple stands as a testament to cultural exchange. It is also a place of quiet reflection. From the Chinese-influenced architecture to the graves of the Mori clan, every corner tells a story. As you leave Tokoji, remember the temple’s history and the serenity it offers.
