Slipping through the shadows of Trieste, an unnerving quiet descends as we approach Rifugio antiaereo Kleine Berlin. This isn’t just another warren of tunnels. It’s a time capsule, a subterranean world whispering tales of a city under siege. Rifugio antiaereo Kleine Berlin, or “Little Berlin,” stands as a chilling reminder of Trieste’s turbulent past during World War II. This vast underground complex served as a refuge, a sanctuary from the relentless air raids that shook the city. But it was more than just a shelter. It was a microcosm of a divided city, a hidden world reflecting the tensions above. The complex is divided into two distinct sections. The Italian side, built by the city of Trieste, offered refuge to the civilian population. It was a labyrinth of parallel tunnels, connected by perpendicular passages. Some areas still hold remnants of the past, like wooden benches where families huddled together, a first aid room where the injured sought solace, and basic toilet facilities. Then there’s the German side. This section, built by the Germans after they annexed Trieste into the “Adriatic Coast Operational Zone” in 1943, was a world apart. Larger rooms branched off a main tunnel, covering an area of 1,000 square meters. This sector was the exclusive domain of SS troops, a clandestine network shrouded in secrecy. It even served as a hidden passage for SS-Gruppenführer Odilo Globočnik, connecting his villa to the Trieste Court. The German side of Rifugio antiaereo Kleine Berlin held a secret. A clandestine passage led directly to the villa of SS- und Polizeiführer Odilo Globocnik. Access was strictly forbidden to non-Germans. One can only imagine the hushed movements, the clandestine meetings that unfolded within these walls. As the war neared its end, this underground city became a final refuge. On April 30, 1945, as Trieste revolted, German soldiers sought shelter within Rifugio antiaereo Kleine Berlin’s deep corridors. The partisans surrounded the complex, but never breached its defenses. The trapped soldiers soon surrendered, marking the end of a chapter in Trieste’s history. Today, Rifugio antiaereo Kleine Berlin stands silent, a stark reminder of a city caught in the crossfire of war. It serves as a museum now, allowing visitors to walk these historic corridors, to feel the weight of the past, and to remember a time when the world above was too dangerous to inhabit.
