Do you hear the whisper of the Sindelfingen Forest? It carries tales of a small chapel, a beacon of hope amid the trees. Here stands the Bernet-Kapelle. Once, this was simply a shelter for hardworking foresters. After 1945, everything changed.
Imagine a wave of refugees and displaced people arriving. They sought solace and a place to call home. The shelter was transformed into a Marian chapel. It became a religious haven for those living in the Bernetbaracken. These barracks housed those who had lost everything. The Bernet-Kapelle offered them comfort.
In the 1950s, Pastor Martin Übelhör of the Dreifaltigkeitskirche played a vital role. He held masses here on important feast days. Evening devotions filled the chapel during May. This brought spiritual nourishment to the displaced community.
Tragedy struck when fire damaged the chapel. The city of Sindelfingen owns both the chapel and the surrounding forest. They rebuilt it according to the original plans. Later, an iron protective grid was installed. This was to prevent repeated damage to the chapel.
Look closely at the Baroque Madonna. Salettiner Father Stefan Huwyler donated it. He led the parish of St. Joseph from 1959 to 1999. The statue commemorates the Marian apparition in La Salette in 1846. Two shepherd children witnessed this event.
Notice the crucifix on the side facing the A8 motorway. It watches over travelers passing by. The Bernet-Kapelle is cared for by volunteers from the St. Joseph parish. Their dedication keeps this sacred space open.
Each year in May, a Marian devotion takes place here. This is a cherished tradition. Throughout the year, wanderers and worshippers visit the Bernet-Kapelle. They seek peace and reflection.
