“Imagine a place where the earth gives up its treasures” is my way to introduce Franklin Mine. It is not just a hole in the ground. It is a story etched in stone and mineral. Franklin Mine, also known as Franklin Furnace, is renowned for its mineral wealth. It is located in Franklin, Sussex County, New Jersey.

This mine stands out. It has produced more mineral species than any other location. Over 300 different fluorescent minerals have been found here. The Franklin Mine mineral association includes willemite, zincite, and franklinite. These minerals tell a tale of geological wonder.

In the mid to late 19th century, the Franklin Furnace became an iron-making hub. Immigrants from Russia, Chile, Britain, Ireland, Hungary, and Poland flocked here. They sought work in the mines. Franklin’s population boomed. It grew from 500 in 1897 to over 3000 in 1913. The mine attracted people from all over the world.

The Furnace mine was next to the actual furnace. It had a 120+ foot vertical shaft. It was just under Franklin Falls. Imagine the miners descending into the depths. They were seeking iron ore.

The Franklin Mine is home to many rare minerals. Esperite, clinohedrite, and hardystonite can be found here. Many minerals are found only here. Johnbaumite is one of them. It is an arsenous apatite. These unique minerals make Franklin Mine a geological treasure trove.

A similar zinc orebody exists at Sterling Hill. It is located a few miles away in Ogdensburg. Both sites highlight the area’s rich mineral deposits.

Today, Franklin Mine attracts mineral collectors and researchers. They come to study its unique geology. The mine’s legacy lives on through its minerals and the stories of those who worked there.

Franklin Mine is more than just a mine. It represents a unique chapter in mining history. It is a testament to nature’s artistry. Its fluorescent minerals continue to amaze. They light up the world of geology.
