The legend says that a wooden log once blocked the flow of the Brusnice stream, preventing a thirsty deer from drinking. It was Saint Vojtěch who removed the log, allowing the deer to quench its thirst. This simple act of kindness, however, became the foundation of something much greater: Břevnov, Prague’s oldest monastery. Břevnov Monastery, a majestic complex of brick buildings, is a reminder of a rich history dating back to the 10th century. It was founded by Prague Bishop Vojtěch and Czech Prince Boleslav II on January 14, 993. This Benedictine monastery embraced the motto “To pray and to work”, and it continued to thrive through turbulent times, serving as a center of education and a beacon of spiritual life in Prague. During the Hussite Wars, Břevnov suffered destruction, but it was rebuilt with Baroque splendor between 1708 and 1745. The monastery, spared from Joseph II’s reforms, survived to witness the tumultuous 20th century, experiencing both suppression under the communist regime and its eventual revival. Today, Břevnov stands as a testament to resilience, a peaceful oasis amidst the bustling city of Prague. Stroll through the grounds and linger by the Baroque pavilion Vojtěška, built to protect the spring of the Brusnice stream. Discover the Gothic cross vault, a remnant of the monastery’s past, nestled within the pavilion’s walls. The monastery brewery is also a popular stop, offering a taste of local history and tradition. As you explore Břevnov, you are not just visiting a place, but immersing yourself in centuries of stories, faith, and enduring spirit. This monastery is a place of quiet reflection and historical significance in Prague, a testament to the strength and resilience of human endeavor.
