In 1870, a simple ferry service near the Anker inn in Wipkingen wasn’t enough. The residents yearned for a bridge to connect them to the booming industrial area of Sihlfeld. The Wipkingerbrücke, their dream, was finally realized in 1872. This first Wipkingerbrücke, a humble iron structure, was a symbol of progress. It spanned the Limmat River, linking Wipkingen and Escher-Wyss-Platz. The Franco-Prussian War and a particularly wet spring delayed its completion. Ironically, the grand opening, planned alongside the Rosengartenstrasse schoolhouse inauguration, was postponed. The access road on the Wipkingen side wasn’t finished. The bridge opened quietly, without fanfare, a vital link nonetheless. This first Wipkingerbrücke lacked a name until 1893, receiving its official title during the incorporation of Wipkingen and Aussersihl into Zurich. The arrival of the Zurich-Höngg tramway in 1898 posed a challenge. The bridge couldn’t support the weight of the trams. A separate tram bridge was built to the east, a temporary solution to a growing problem. The increasing population of Wipkingen, drawn by the Escher Wyss factory in the Industriequartier, soon overwhelmed the Wipkingerbrücke. Just a few decades later, in 1901, a second, wider Wipkingerbrücke was inaugurated. At 18 meters wide, it was the broadest river crossing between Zurich and Baden, accommodating both road and tram traffic. However, budget constraints meant a simple water-bound surface instead of asphalt. The old tram bridge, too short for reuse elsewhere, was sold for scrap. By the late 1960s, the demands of modern transportation necessitated a complete rebuild. The Wipkingerbrücke, as we know it today, became part of a double-decker structure. The upper level, now considered part of the Hardbrücke, became a major artery. This thoroughfare connected Glattal to the left bank of Lake Zurich. The Hardbrücke, and by extension the lower-level Wipkingerbrücke, bore the brunt of north-south traffic until the Westumfahrung’s opening in 2009. Three independent structures, supported by two pillars in the Limmat, make up the current Wipkingerbrücke. The upper and lower decks each carry two lanes of traffic and a sidewalk. The middle section accommodates the tram line 13 and the lanes of the elevated Hardbrücke above. The Wipkingerbrücke is more than just a bridge. It is a testament to Zurich’s growth and adaptation, a silent witness to the city’s ever-evolving story.
