Hidden amongst the rolling hills west of Wellington lies Makara Village. A seemingly quiet haven Makara holds secrets whispered on the wind.

Makara’s name itself is a story. It’s derived from the Makara Stream. ‘Ma’ meaning white in Maori and ‘kara’ referring to a type of greywacke stone. This small stream flows through the heart of the village. It eventually reaches the Tasman Sea.

For centuries Makara was a remote settlement. Its early inhabitants were primarily Maori. In the 1800s a small gold rush swept through the area. Though no significant deposits were found numerous abandoned mine shafts remain. They are testaments to those hopeful prospectors. These old tunnels are scattered across the hillsides.

The 20th century brought significant changes. Coastal fortifications were built at Fort Opau during World War II. These gun emplacements still stand as silent guardians. They offer stunning views of the Cook Strait. A unique event for Makara was the arrival of the Cook Strait Cable. It was the world’s largest submarine cable when it became operational in 1965. This cable connected the North and South Islands. It was a marvel of engineering.

Makara also played host to a radio receiving station at Quartz Hill. This station was vital for receiving overseas broadcasts. It later became a hub for amateur radio enthusiasts. The West Wind wind farm is another landmark. Its towering turbines are visible for miles around. This wind farm has divided opinions. Its construction however brought significant improvements to the community’s infrastructure. The Makara Model School serves the small village. The school is a centre of the community. Its small size reflects the close-knit atmosphere of the village.

Makara Village is a place of contrasts. It blends rural tranquility with fascinating history. Its people demonstrate resilience and community spirit. Its breathtaking scenery remains an attraction. The village invites you to explore its rich heritage. You can enjoy its stunning natural beauty. Makara’s story continues to unfold. It welcomes visitors to share in its unique charm.
