The soaring crown-like silhouette pierces the Warsaw sky. This is the Church of the Mother of God. It stands before you a testament to faith perseverance and the vibrant spirit of Bemowo.

The Church of the Mother of God wasn’t always this imposing structure. Its story began much more humbly. Erected in 1984 the parish initially lacked a proper church building. A temporary chapel served the growing community. The need for a permanent place of worship was undeniable.

Construction of the present church began in 1987. It continued through the 1990s. Architect Kazimierz Kostrzewski designed this remarkable building. He drew inspiration from Romanesque architecture and Protestant church designs. The result is unique. The interior gallery is a striking feature.

The church’s consecration was a major event. Cardinal Jozef Glemp himself presided over the ceremony in 1996. Further sanctification followed in 2000.

The Church of the Mother of God houses several significant artistic works. A painting of Our Lady of Lasek from Jelonki dating back to 1920 takes pride of place. It’s the work of Maria z Wendorffow Kraskowska. Contemporary stained-glass windows depicting the Annunciation the Adoration of the Magi and the Testament of the Cross add brilliance to the sanctuary. A modern Stations of the Cross painted by Elzbieta Ostrowska-Lysak decorates the gallery.

Perhaps the most intriguing item is a unique baldachin. This was originally placed over the altar during a papal mass on Pilsudski Square. It’s made of plastic. It features a naturalistic depiction of the Holy Spirit. It’s a peculiar but striking addition to this house of worship.

The Church of the Mother of God continues to serve the community. It’s a beautiful building with a rich history. It’s a place where faith is celebrated art is appreciated and community is fostered. It’s a visible landmark a beacon of hope in this corner of Warsaw. As you stand here you are witnessing a remarkable story of faith perseverance and artistic achievement.
