The majestic dome of the Vienna Islamic Centre gleams. A beacon of faith in the heart of Vienna.

This isn’t just any mosque. This is the Vienna Islamic Centre also known as the Omer bin Alkhattab Moschee. It stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of Viennese life. Its story is one of persistence and international cooperation.

In 1969 the Islamic Community in Vienna acquired land to build a mosque. Financial hurdles delayed construction for years. Then in 1975 Saudi King Faisal bin Abdulaziz al Saud stepped in. He pledged to finance the mosque’s construction personally. This act of generosity marked a turning point.

Richard Lugner became the general contractor. Construction began on July 1 1977. On November 20 1979 President Rudolf Kirchschläger inaugurated the Vienna Islamic Centre. The event was widely covered in the local media. The Zeit im Bild even aired a report that day.

The completed mosque is truly impressive. Its minaret reaches 32 meters high. The dome measures 16 meters in height and boasts a diameter of 20 meters. More than just a place of worship the centre offers facilities for the study and practice of Islamic culture. It’s a vibrant hub for the Viennese Muslim community and a symbol of intercultural exchange.

The Vienna Islamic Centre isn’t just stone and mortar. It’s a story of ambition overcome. A symbol of international collaboration. And a place of peace and prayer within the diverse heart of Vienna. So take a moment to appreciate this unique landmark. Let its grandeur and significance leave a lasting impression.
