Illawong

Gazing across the tranquil waters, can you sense the ancient whispers of Illawong? Illawong, an Aboriginal word meaning “between two waters,” rests serenely between the Georges and Woronora Rivers in southern Sydney. This suburb, located 27 kilometers south of Sydney’s Central Business District, holds a rich history intertwined with the lives of the Tharawal and/or Eora tribes. These original inhabitants left behind traces of their existence in middens, rock carvings, and cave paintings scattered throughout the area. Illawong was once known as East Menai, a tranquil escape for Sydney’s wealthy, who built holiday homes and weekend retreats amidst the natural beauty. Illawong became part of Sutherland Shire in 1921. In the 1970s, the area underwent suburbanization. Illawong’s streets now bear historic nautical names, a testament to its connection to the waterways that define it. The heart of Illawong beats within its small shopping center, Illawong Village. Rebuilt in 2007, it bustles with activity. A supermarket, a large liquor store, and a variety of specialty shops line its walkways, offering everything from fresh produce to unique gifts. Cafes and restaurants provide a place to relax and enjoy the local atmosphere. Illawong also faces the ever-present threat of bushfires. The devastating Eastern seaboard fires of 1994 ravaged the area, leaving a scar on the landscape and a reminder of nature’s power. The Menai/Illawong Rural Fire Service stands vigilant, protecting the community from future threats. The 1st Wearne Bay Sea Scouts call Illawong home. Their scout hall, once the residence of former ferry master Mr. Maurie Chegwidden, sits proudly on the shores of Georges River. This hall echoes with the laughter and energy of Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, and Rovers, carrying on the tradition of scouting since 1966. Illawong offers its residents a unique blend of history, community, and natural beauty. It’s a place where the whispers of the past mingle with the sounds of modern life.
