International relations are a strong focus. Exchanges have been a big part of life at Keisen for 30 years. Each year two international students study here. They come through AFS and YFU programs. These are year-long exchanges.

Focused classes prepare them for the Japanese proficiency test. Grammar conversation and kanji studies are part of this. They experience Japanese culture first hand. They stay with Keisen host families.

Many Keisen students study abroad each year. This broadens their understanding of the world. There is an Empowerment Program with American University students. Short-term studies occur in Eureka United States and Brisbane Australia. Medium-term studies are at Fairholm College Mt Alvernia and St Margarets in Queensland Australia. Long-term exchanges take place in Moreton Bay College Australia. AFS and YFS programs also facilitate these.

In 1950 classrooms had pot-belly stoves. These heated the rooms during January. Each room received one bucket of coal a day. Junior high school girls didn’t know how to build a fire. Rooms were dense with smoke.
