Ten meters tall she stands a wooden goddess welcoming you to the light. This is Ven a la Cruz a magnificent sculpture in Tulum Mexico. Created by the South African artist Daniel Popper it’s more than just art. It’s a statement. A testament to humanity’s delicate relationship with nature.

Popper envisioned Ven a la Cruz for the Art With Me Festival in 2018. Initially the sculpture served as a gateway to the Ahau Tulum Resort and Raw Love Cafe. Its immense popularity however caused a problem. The throngs of visitors created a safety hazard on the already narrow beach road.

So in 2021 after Hurricane Grace caused some damage the decision was made. Ven a la Cruz needed relocation and repairs. The solution was a new home a dedicated sculpture park within the Ahau Tulum grounds. Now visitors can admire this iconic work of art. They can do so in a more controlled and safer environment.

Ven a la Cruz is constructed from wood rope steel and plants. The artist’s intention was clear. He wanted to emphasize the beauty of the natural world. The sculpture’s design is intricate. It features a female figure her chest open to reveal a vibrant heart of lush greenery. You can almost feel the cool shade under its wooden frame. The plants thrive creating an archway that invites you to step into its embrace.

The symbolism is rich. The figure’s closed eyes her downward gaze suggest contemplation. Her open chest an invitation to connect with nature. It is a visual representation of inner peace and the harmony between humanity and nature. Today a small fee is charged to enter the sculpture park. This is to cover maintenance and support the artists who create similar works.

So here you are standing before Ven a la Cruz. Take a moment to appreciate its grandeur. Feel the texture of the wood. Smell the fresh plants. Let the artistry of Daniel Popper inspire you. Let the sculpture’s message of balance and connection resonate within you. This is an experience to remember a masterpiece in the heart of Tulum.
