Imagine almost 4800 spectators comfortably seated in double wooden chairs. Professor T R Loudon along with architects Messers Pearson and Darling designed this architectural marvel. Its interior volume was a staggering 151595 cubic meters. The arena’s ice surface rested on an ingenious foundation of iron pipes covered in sand.
Varsity Arena has been home to the University of Toronto’s Varsity Blues ice hockey teams since its opening. But its history extends far beyond the university. The Toronto Toros of the World Hockey Association played here from 1973 to 1974. The Toronto Planets of the Roller Hockey International also graced its ice in 1993. The arena even hosted the University of Toronto’s intramural hockey league with a whopping 46 men’s and eight women’s teams. Before 2009 Varsity Arena also served an unexpected purpose it hosted university exams. Think of hundreds of exam tables replacing the ice surface.
Renovations between 1985 and 1986 modernized Varsity Arena. The seating capacity decreased to 4116. The ice sheet was expanded to professional standards. Fire code violations discovered in 1977 were addressed. This ensured the safety and enjoyment of future generations of fans and athletes. Today the arena’s gross floor area is 6560.03 square meters a testament to its enduring presence.
Dave Trottier scored the first goal in Varsity Arena. He played for the Varsity Grads. It was a two period exhibition game against the Varsity Blues. He later went on to play in the NHL.
