Swimming in a canal? It might sound strange but here at Donau-Oder-Kanal Becken III, it is a delightful reality. This is not just any body of water. It’s part of a historic project. A project that aimed to connect the Danube and Oder rivers.

The Donau-Oder-Kanal itself has a fascinating story. Emperor Charles IV dreamed of this connection in the 14th century. The vision resurfaced in the 19th century. During the Nazi era, plans were revived. The goal was a 320-kilometer waterway. It would stretch from the Oder to Vienna.

In 1939, Rudolf Hess inaugurated part of the project. It was then called the Adolf Hitler Canal. He also initiated work on the Donau-Oder-Kanal. However, work on the Upper Silesian side stopped in 1940.

Of the planned 40 kilometers in Austria, only a few were completed by 1940. These sections are in Lobau and near Groß-Enzersdorf. They are known as DOK I to IV. Donau-Oder-Kanal Becken III is one of these sections.

Today, Donau-Oder-Kanal Becken III is part of a charming area. It is surrounded by small gardens. Although the southern part is freely accessible. It is perfect for sunbathing.

Sections of the Donau-Oder-Kanal are now used for recreation. Donau-Oder-Kanal Becken II and III are popular for swimming. The city of Vienna refers to them as Zweierkanal and Dreierkanal. Clear water makes them inviting.

Efforts continue to maintain the canal’s purity. An association ensures the cleanliness of DOK IV. This commitment helps preserve the canal’s natural beauty.

Bathing in the Donau-Oder-Kanal Becken III offers a unique experience. It combines history with nature. Imagine swimming where grand plans once unfolded. The uncompleted dream is now a local treasure.

The Donau-Oder-Kanal, though never finished, offers a glimpse into ambitious visions. Its clear waters and green surroundings provide a peaceful retreat. So take a moment to enjoy this unique Viennese spot. It is a place where history and leisure meet.
