Tucked away in Matsudo City, rests the Matsudo Shiritsu Minoridai Elementary School. Have you ever wondered what stories these walls hold? Our journey takes us back to the Edo period (1603-1868), a time when education began to blossom among commoners. While samurai children attended exclusive schools, the children of merchants and farmers flocked to terakoya, or “temple schools.” Matsudo Shiritsu Minoridai Elementary School, while not a terakoya itself, echoes this rich history of community-based learning. Imagine young children diligently copying kanji characters under the watchful eye of a Buddhist priest or a learned doctor. These terakoya were not bound by rigid curriculums. Instead, they catered to each child’s individual pace and aptitude, much like a modern-day tutor. Reading, writing, and the abacus were the core subjects. Children would chant Chinese and Japanese classics until they were etched into their memories. Interestingly, some neighborhoods in Edo boasted two terakoya, hinting at a remarkably high literacy rate, sometimes estimated as high as 80 percent in Tokyo. Even rural communities, though with fewer schools, recognized the value of literacy. Farmers, in particular, were eager to learn, lest they be tricked by cunning tax collectors. This thirst for knowledge laid the foundation for the remarkable educational transformation that Japan underwent during the Meiji period (1868-1912), a period that saw the establishment of a modern school system inspired by European models. Matsudo Shiritsu Minoridai Elementary School, in the heart of this historically rich prefecture, stands as a testament to this ongoing educational journey. From the humble terakoya to the modern classrooms of today, the pursuit of knowledge has shaped the very fabric of Japanese society.
