Stepping back in time to 1843, we find ourselves at the birth of St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church. This was Washington D.C.’s very first English-speaking Lutheran church. The church’s first home was at the corner of 11th and H Streets NW. The land was a generous gift from John Peter Van Ness. He was an Episcopalian known for his philanthropy. Imagine the scene in 1844. John Quincy Adams, a former president, attends the cornerstone laying. A few years later, in 1848, President James K. Polk and Secretary of State James Buchanan attended the dedication. St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church had truly arrived. A fascinating piece of history lies within the church walls. A silver communion chalice, gifted in 1845 by King Frederick Wilhelm IV of Prussia and his queen, Elisabeth. This chalice has been used in every communion service ever since. The church’s journey wasn’t always easy. The early years brought financial struggles. Pastor John E. Graff, who joined St. Pauls in 1846, embarked on an incredible fundraising journey. He traveled hundreds of miles on horseback throughout Maryland and Pennsylvania, gathering support. By 1926, St. Pauls merged with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Epiphany. The agreement stipulated keeping the St. Pauls name and charter. The new church would be at 4900 Connecticut Avenue NW. The Great Depression delayed construction. However, the dedicated members persevered. The current magnificent Gothic Revival structure of St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church was finally completed and dedicated in 1958. St. Pauls is known as the “Mother Church of English Lutheranism” in Washington D.C. It has several “daughter” and “granddaughter” congregations. These include Reformation, Luther Place Memorial, St. Mark’s, Zion, Our Redeemer, Keller Memorial, and Epiphany. The church has been served by a succession of twelve pastors, each contributing to its rich history. St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church stands today as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
