“A school for the modern age!” That’s what they called it, the experimental school at Villaggio Olimpia. It was the early 1970s, and Villaggio Olimpia, a Turin suburb, faced an unprecedented challenge. Waves of families, drawn by the promise of work at the nearby Fiat factories, had settled in the area. Villaggio Olimpia was bustling, but its youngest residents were underserved. The influx of children overwhelmed the existing schools, leaving many without adequate support. The Villaggio Olimpia experiment aimed to bridge this gap by offering a full-day educational experience. Parents, especially those new to the city and navigating long workdays, embraced the initiative. On January 15th, 1971, the Villaggio Olimpia school opened its doors. Almost all the children from the local elementary school, “Nino Costa,” filled its classrooms. Five experienced teachers, a dynamic educator, and three specialists in creative expression formed the heart of this innovative program. Funding came from the local council, the Settimo Patronato, and even a small contribution from the Provincial Consortium. Families, recognizing the value, contributed a nominal fee. The Villaggio Olimpia school, a beacon of progress, wasn’t just about academics. It recognized the need for holistic development, offering a blend of educational support and enriching activities. The experiment, a testament to Villaggio Olimpia’s commitment to its youngest residents, paved the way for a brighter future.
