Before you stands the Stratford Motor Lodge. It whispers tales of transitions and a city’s evolving heart.

Once a landmark, the Stratford Motor Lodge enjoyed its heyday in the 1960s. An early postcard boasted its proximity to Washington D.C. It was just 20 minutes away. The motel featured ultra-modern rooms, color TV, and even personally conducted sightseeing tours.

Fast forward to 2019. The Stratford Motor Lodge had fallen into disrepair. Its reputation declined. A crime report noted arrests for prostitution at the motel. By 2021, it was boarded up. Locals considered it an eyesore.

Various redevelopment plans emerged. A senior living center was proposed but failed. A Wawa convenience store was also scrapped.

But a new vision arose in December 2024. It was called Stratford Gardens. Dominion Wine & Beer partnered with Lee Design Studio. They proposed a refreshing concept.

Matt Lee, the lead architect, is enthusiastic about the project. He envisions green space and outdoor seating. It will draw people from outside the city. The owners of Dominion Wine and Beer are shaping the concept. They are considering names but leaning towards Stratford Gardens.

The design includes collaboration with Francois Fossard. He is a restaurant designer from Miami. The old restaurant and lobby space of the Stratford Motor Lodge will be kept. Nostalgia will be preserved. The existing building will become the kitchen and storage. An outdoor eating pavilion will wrap around it.

The goal is to create a park-like atmosphere. It will be enclosed and family-friendly. There will be open space for seating. Plans include outdoor fire pits and umbrellas.

The Stratford Motor Lodge project aims to revitalize an eyesore. It will improve the public square. Lee finds it exciting to give the building a new life. It will remain a landmark.

Arash Tafakor wants a family-friendly atmosphere. He also hopes for strong customer service and good food.

The Planning Commission supports the project. They see it as a great adaptive reuse. It will improve the blighted area. Tafakor plans to activate the outdoor space year-round. Fire pits and hot drinks are planned for winter.

The Stratford Motor Lodge is transforming. It will soon offer a new experience. It will be a vibrant addition to Falls Church. The Stratford Gardens will create a welcoming space. The site promotes community and enjoyment for all.
