Imagine this a surge of anticipation. A wave of excitement washes over you as you approach the iconic Hordern Pavilion. Affectionately known as “The Hordern” by Sydneysiders this building has been a landmark since 1924.

The Hordern Pavilion stands in Moore Park on the grounds of the old Sydney Showground. It is more than just a building. It’s a cultural touchstone. Originally built for the Royal Easter Show it now hosts sports dance parties and music concerts.

Let’s step back in time. The Hordern Pavilion was named to honor the Hordern family. This included Anthony Hordern and Sons and Sir Samuel Hordern. Sir Samuel was president of the Royal Agricultural Society from 1915 to 1941. The building’s design reflects Inter-War Academic Classical style. Admire the rendered masonry classical detailing fluted Doric columns a parapet and the imposing vaulted roof with its lantern tower. The original cost to build the Hordern Pavilion was £45000. That would be millions today. Premier Sir George Fuller officially opened the Hordern Pavilion on April 2 1924.

Interestingly the Hordern Pavilion even served as a bulk store for the Army during WWII.

In 1972 the Hordern Pavilion underwent significant modifications. Columns were removed and replaced with a new truss system. False ceilings were introduced along with a bar ticketing boxes and a mezzanine corporate box area. These changes transformed the Hordern. It became a more versatile venue.

The Hordern Pavilion has hosted countless performances. Manfred Mann’s Earth Band rocked the Hordern in 1972. Jethro Tull played multiple shows across several years. Cat Stevens shared his music in 1972 and 1974. The list goes on.

Many famous artists have graced the stage. This includes Frank Zappa The Jackson 5 Little Richard and Frank Sinatra. AC/DC The Bee Gees and Queen have also played here. The Hordern Pavilion has seen them all.

From the late 80s the Hordern Pavilion became a hub for Australia’s rave movement. Entrepreneurial collectives like the Recreational Arts Team hosted dance parties. Mardi Gras events also became a fixture at the Hordern Pavilion.

Even after the Sydney Entertainment Centre opened in 1983 the Hordern Pavilion remained vital. It attracted local and up-and-coming acts. Nirvana Red Hot Chili Peppers Green Day and Silverchair all played here.

The Royal Easter Show moved to Homebush Bay in 1997. The Hordern Pavilion became an independent venue. Renovations in 1999 provided flexible modern facilities.

Today the Hordern Pavilion continues to host major events. Global stars like Coldplay Foo Fighters and Justin Timberlake have performed here. The Arctic Monkeys Billie Eilish and Flume have also graced its stage.

The Hordern Pavilion acknowledges the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation. They are the traditional custodians of this land. We pay respect to their Elders past present and emerging.

The Hordern Pavilion is more than just a venue. It’s a living piece of Sydney’s history. Its walls echo with the sounds of music laughter and memories. As you stand here take a moment to appreciate the legacy of this iconic landmark. The Hordern Pavilion continues to be a place where unforgettable experiences are made.
