Poised with a pen and music paper on his knees, Franz Schubert seems lost in thought. This is the Schubert Monument in Vienna’s Stadtpark. It stands as a tribute to one of the city’s most beloved sons. The statue was unveiled on May 15, 1872. It commemorates the composer Franz Schubert who lived from 1797 to 1828.
The idea for this memorial came from the Vienna Men’s Choral Society in 1862. They established a fund to honor Schubert. They raised money through concerts and donations. After discussions about the location and design, Carl Kundmann was chosen to sculpt the statue.
Moritz von Schwind, a painter and friend of Schubert, ensured the likeness was accurate. Theophil Hansen designed the pedestal. It features reliefs by Kundmann. The statue itself is crafted from Carrara marble.
In 1868, the foundation stone was laid. The Mayor of Vienna, Andreas Zelinka, was present. Four years later, the unveiling was a grand affair. The Mayor of Vienna, Cajetan von Felder, attended. Members of Schubert’s family and associates were also there. Nikolaus Dumba, an industrialist and arts patron, gave the dedicatory speech. He noted that the statue was built stone by stone through Schubert’s songs, not just donations.
Look closely at the statue. Schubert sits with a pensive expression. He appears to be contemplating a new composition. It is one of the few portrayals of Schubert without glasses. The inscription reads: “Franz Schubert: to his memory. The Vienna Men’s Choral Society, 1872”.
The pedestal’s reliefs symbolize different aspects of Schubert’s music. “Imagination” is on the front. “Instrumental music” is on the left. “Vocal music” is on the right. These reliefs represent Schubert’s musical merits.
Carl Kundmann also designed the memorial for Schubert’s grave. It is located in the Zentralfriedhof cemetery. Here, Schubert rests among other musical giants like Beethoven and Johann Strauss II.
The Stadtpark features memorials to other composers too. Franz Lehar and Anton Bruckner are among them. But the golden Strauss statue often steals the spotlight. However, the Schubert Monument offers a quieter, more reflective experience.
Behind the statue, trees provide a beautiful backdrop. The park itself offers a tranquil escape with meadows and a river. It is fitting that the Schubert Statue is located here in the west side of the Stadtpark. It is off the Ringstrasse. It is a place where you can reflect on Schubert’s enduring legacy.
