Could a village hold the key to a kingdom’s fate? Here in Dobříč u Prahy, the whispers of history tell just such a tale. Dobříč u Prahy, a seemingly quiet village nestled in the Czech countryside, played a surprisingly significant role in the tumultuous power struggles of Bohemia. Our story begins in 1205, with the Vladike Nostislav gifting the Dobříč estate, complete with its fertile fields, orchard, and surrounding woods, to the Insula Monastery. This act of piety, however, unknowingly placed Dobříč u Prahy in the path of future conflicts. Imagine the year 1278. The death of King Ottokar II has plunged the kingdom into chaos. Brandenburgian troops, seizing the opportunity, descend upon the region, leaving a trail of destruction. The monastery and its surrounding villages, including Dobříč u Prahy, are ravaged. The peaceful existence of this small village is shattered.

Years later, another wave of violence sweeps through Dobříč u Prahy. This time, it’s the army of Henry of Carinthia, taking advantage of the power vacuum after the murder of King Wenceslas III. Pillage and destruction become synonymous with Dobříč u Prahy once more. Yet, amidst the chaos, a glimmer of hope emerges. John of Luxembourg secures Prague, and the abbot of Insula, Hermann, appeals to Pope Clement V for protection. A papal bull is issued, safeguarding the monastery’s holdings, including Dobříč u Prahy, offering a temporary respite from the violence. But the peace wouldn’t last. The Hussite Wars erupt, and in 1420, the monastery at Insula is besieged and burned. Dobříč u Prahy, tied to the monastery’s fate, is once again caught in the crossfire.

The following centuries saw Dobříč u Prahy passed from hand to hand, a pawn in the games of nobles and kings. Emperor Sigismund confiscates the monastery’s lands, only to later pawn Dobříč u Prahy to Hospříd of Hostivice for his loyalty. The estate changes hands multiple times, even returning briefly to the Insula Monastery before being confiscated again and sold to Jindřich Šťastný Homut of Harasov. The Thirty Years’ War brought further destruction to Dobříč u Prahy. The once-thriving village was left in ruins, a testament to the turbulent times.

By 1846, Dobříč u Prahy consisted of 28 houses, its population a mere 155. Divided between the Karlstein and St. Johann estates, the village struggled to regain its footing. The rise of the iron industry in the late 19th century breathed new life into Dobříč u Prahy. The opening of the Škroby iron mine north of the village brought an influx of workers, leading to the construction of new houses and a surge in population. Dobříč u Prahy, forever marked by the tides of history, has endured. From its peaceful beginnings to its role in the kingdom’s struggles, Dobříč u Prahy stands as a reminder that even the smallest of villages can hold a significant place in the grand tapestry of history.
