Considering its stones could whisper tales from centuries ago. Here before us stands the Church of svatý Václav na Zderaze a testament to Prague’s enduring spirit. This gothic church has witnessed many pivotal moments. It has been rebuilt and repurposed reflecting the city’s ever-changing story.

Svatý Václav na Zderaze began as a small Romanesque church. It likely dated back to the 12th century. The first recorded mention of it was around 1180. Noblemen Kojata and Všebor from the Hrabišic family played a role. They gifted their property to establish a monastery for the Order of the Knights of the Cross.

Interestingly svatý Václav na Zderaze took over parish duties. This happened because the residents lost their original parish church. It became a focal point for the Zderaz settlement. In 1278 Bishop Valentine consecrated the church. This confirmed its sacred status.

Fast forward to the 14th century. The founding of Prague’s New Town spurred major changes. The Church of svatý Václav na Zderaze became one of the new town’s parish churches. Records from 1379-1382 detail its four altars. It had all the necessary liturgical equipment. A vaulted chancel with cross-ribbed vaults was constructed.

During the Hussite wars in 1420 the monastery was burned down. However svatý Václav na Zderaze was spared. It was then used by Hussite priests. After the wars efforts were made to restore the church. New altars dedicated to various saints were added.

In 1586 Emperor Rudolf II contributed to the church’s preservation. The wooden ceiling was removed. A new vault was constructed in the late Gothic style. This project was led by Karel Mělnický. This required lowering the Gothic windows.

Following the Battle of White Mountain in 1620 the church changed hands. It became property of the Order of St Augustine. Cardinal Harrach officially re-consecrated svatý Václav na Zderaze in 1646. Karel Škréta’s paintings of St Wenceslas were installed.

Emperor Josef II abolished the monastery including the church in 1785. It was used as storage space and a laundry. From 1822 to 1826 the building served as a prison. It was re-consecrated again. It then held masses for prisoners until 1884.

After 1918 the Czechoslovak Hussite Church acquired svatý Václav na Zderaze. It still owns the building today. The church was reconstructed in 1929. A celebratory mass marked the millennium of St Wenceslas’s death.

The church suffered significant damage during World War II. Allied bombing in 1945 caused harm. Repairs were carried out in 1947. In 2006 a state of disrepair prompted further restoration.

Inside svatý Václav na Zderaze you will see a blend of architectural styles. The presbytery is adorned with cross vaults. The nave features late Gothic vaulting with terracotta ribs. Wall paintings depicting the life of St Wenceslas add to its artistic richness.

Today svatý Václav na Zderaze stands as a symbol of resilience. It embodies Prague’s layered history. Each stone tells a story of survival and transformation.
