Killarney Park Mennonite Brethren Church started with a vision. Fraserview Mennonite Brethren Church outgrew its space in the early 1960s. They joined with Vancouver Mennonite Brethren Church. Together they purchased land. They intended to start a new church in Vancouver. Killarney Park Mennonite Brethren Church was born. The building was completed in 1961. It was dedicated on June 18, 1961.
Imagine the first service. One hundred seventy-eight chartered members filled the pews. Herbert J. Brandt was the first leader. He became the full-time pastor in 1962.
The church thrived for two decades. But the 1980s brought challenges. Economic shifts and rising real estate prices caused members to leave. Pastoral changes in the 1990s also led to a decline. But Killarney Park Church adapted.
The church embraced its changing neighborhood. It became an intentionally intercultural church. It welcomes people from all backgrounds.
Consider their mission statement. It reflects this commitment. “God is calling Killarney Park MB Church to be a Christ-centered, Spirit-filled people who embrace the City’s multicultural identity by welcoming and caring for all people.” The church strives to impact the City with righteous living. It also shares God’s message of hope.
In 2010, David Chow became a leading minister. Sherman Lau is the leading minister as of 2022.
Killarney Park Church is more than just Sunday services. It also runs Killarney Park Preschool. The preschool serves the community. It provides a positive and stimulating environment. Children develop socially, emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually.
The church offers a multicultural women’s drop-in support group. Women connect with each other. They are challenged to live a purposeful life. They grow in their relationship with God. They have fun.
The church community prays together. They gather on Zoom twice a month. They pray for their church. They pray for their neighborhood. They pray for the world. They pray for one another.
