A crumbling stone whispers secrets of ages past. This is Old Castle in Stockholm a place where history breathes. It stands proudly overlooking Slottsbacken the entrance to the Royal Palace. Built on the highest point of Stadsholmen by Birger Jarl the city’s founder Old Castle’s story began centuries ago.

Initially a simple wooden chapel Old Castle was destroyed by fire. A larger church replaced it in 1306. Throughout the 15th century Old Castle underwent transformations its Gothic architecture expanding and becoming more elaborate. It evolved into a magnificent cathedral with five naves.

The interiors of Old Castle are lavishly decorated. They house magnificent works of art from the 17th century. Among its treasures is a 15th-century oak and horn sculpture depicting Saint George slaying the dragon. There’s also a gigantic painting of the Last Judgment from 1696. The crucifixion of Christ a Renaissance painting is another highlight. A seven-branched candlestick over 3.7 meters tall and more than 600 years old is a breathtaking sight.
