Step into the legendary Kamiya Bar. Established in 1880 it’s Japan’s oldest bar. Imagine this place a century ago. Gas lamps flickered. Gentlemen in top hats sipped exotic drinks. Kamiya Bar wasn’t just a bar. It was a social hub a place where history unfolded. Its iconic Denki-Bran cocktail a potent mix of brandy gin wine and more was born here. “Denki” means electric reflecting the novelty of electricity in the Meiji era. The original Denki-Bran boasted a whopping 45% alcohol. Today’s version is a bit gentler but still packs a punch.

Kamiya Bar offers more than just drinks. Its menu includes classic izakaya fare and Japanese-style Western dishes. Wax models showcase the food and drinks. They’re so realistic they look almost edible. The ordering system is unique. You order at a central station receive tickets and then are served at your table. The atmosphere is lively yet intimate. Communal tables fill the first floor. Upstairs offers more formal dining.

Many dishes are fried. Kushikatsu deep-fried meat and vegetables is a popular choice. Japanese fried chicken and deep-fried oysters are also favorites. Each dish is served with a side of shredded cabbage a common accompaniment to fried foods in Japan. Less fried options also exist. Shrimp macaroni gratin offers a creamy comforting alternative.

Kamiya Bar’s history extends beyond its cocktails and food. Its founder Mr. Kamiya’s own journey is fascinating. Working for a French winery he collapsed from overwork. A French wine aided his recovery. This inspired him to create his own healthier wine. He eventually perfected the Bee Brand Kozan Grape Wine a blend of grape wine honey and medicinal herbs.

The bar’s interior is large. It features a show window displaying its offerings. The bathroom is conveniently located near the bar. A trip to the restroom provides a glimpse of the bartenders’ craft. Kamiya Bar is cash only. Don’t forget to bring cash. Souvenirs like Denki-Bran glasses and the Bee Brand Grape Wine are available. Remember Kamiya Bar isn’t just a place to drink. It’s a journey through time a slice of Tokyo’s rich history.
