Gazing up at Pulpit Rock, have you ever imagined having breakfast on its edge? Pulpit Rock, also known as Breakfast Rock, is a massive rock outcrop perched above Newlands Forest. It sits in the saddle between Devil’s Peak and Table Mountain, offering breathtaking views. Pulpit Rock stands between Dark Gully and Dark Gorge. These two ravines plunge dramatically to the left and right. From Pulpit Rock, you can see across the Cape Flats to the Hottentots Holland mountain range. This hike is the easiest way to reach Pulpit Rock. You can also hike to it from Rhodes Memorial up Newlands Ravine. Looking out across the southern suburbs from Pulpit rock, the head of Newlands Ravine will be to your right and slightly above you. A word of caution: Pulpit Rock has dangerous drops. Supervise children closely. Also, Dark Gully and Dark Gorge are dangerous, with frequent accidents. Dark Gorge is very steep at the top. It can be scrambled if you’re fit and agile. However, do not attempt Dark Gully without proper climbing equipment and experience. Enjoy the stunning views from Pulpit Rock, but prioritize safety.
