Let’s head over to Grillplatz 10. You’ve probably guessed it – this is one of the many designated grilling spots on the Donauinsel. Now, picture this: you are standing on the right bank of the Neue Donau, looking towards the water, with the Donaustadtbrücke just a short distance away. The air is filled with the scent of grilling sausages, and you can hear the cheerful chatter of families gathering around these charcoal grills. What you might not know is that each of these grills has a unique name, just like this one: Grillplatz 10. In 2015, the city of Vienna decided to rejuvenate all of the grilling areas on the island, giving eleven of them a modern, concrete design. This was a huge undertaking, not just to improve the structures but also to ensure they were eco-friendly and durable for years to come. They even held a competition for the best design, which was won by a team of students from TU Wien who came up with the “Donauwellen” design, which was then applied across the entire island. Grillplatz 10, like its other siblings, is a favorite spot amongst locals and tourists alike. This isn’t just a place for grilling; it’s a place for gathering, sharing stories, and enjoying the warm summer evenings with friends. You’ll notice that Grillplatz 10 has access to water and toilets, making it the perfect place to spend a relaxed day with your loved ones. So, as you enjoy the barbeque scent, remember the vibrant history of this place and the efforts that went into building it, making it a memorable part of the Donauinsel.
