Established in 1956 the Raifu·Ekusutenshon Research Institute affiliated Eiju General Hospital stands proudly in Tokyo. Its history begins not with grand pronouncements but with a quiet determination. Dr Sokei Ueno a prominent physician envisioned a hospital dedicated to advancing geriatric medicine. He sought to improve the lives of the elderly. He rallied support from the Japan Industrial Club. This collaboration led to the creation of the Raifu·Ekusutenshon Kenkyujo a foundation dedicated to supporting the hospital.

The hospital opened its doors with 160 beds and just 60 staff. It was a small beginning for what would become a major medical institution. The initial departments focused on internal medicine surgery obstetrics and gynecology. Specialized departments were added over the years. These included ophthalmology otolaryngology and plastic surgery. The growth reflected the commitment to comprehensive care.

The location initially presented a challenge. The hospital’s original building was a repurposed structure. This meant considerable renovations were needed. This costly undertaking almost prevented the hospital’s opening. Eventually the hospital moved to its current location in 2002. The new facility provided 400 beds. This reflected a growing demand for its services. The hospital also absorbed some functions from other hospitals that were closing down.

The Eiju General Hospital isn’t just a place of healing. It’s a testament to vision dedication and perseverance. It’s a cornerstone of healthcare in the Taito-ku area of Tokyo. Its evolution reflects the changing needs of the community. The hospital remains committed to serving its patients. It continues Dr Ueno’s legacy. This remarkable institution has faced numerous challenges. It persevered through the COVID-19 pandemic. The hospital experienced a devastating outbreak in 2020. More than 200 staff and patients were infected. Sadly several lives were lost. The resilience of the staff and the support of the community. This helped the hospital overcome this difficult period.

Today Eiju General Hospital stands as a symbol of hope and healing. It continues its mission of providing high quality care. It honors its founding principles. It’s a vital part of the fabric of Tokyo. This is the legacy of Eiju General Hospital. A story etched in both triumph and tragedy. It’s a story of remarkable people dedicated to the well-being of others.
