On a moonless night in 1533, a celestial event unfolded above this very spot. A shooting star, guided by the deity Inari Ōkami, descended upon the earth. This marked the birth of Kaichū Inari Shrine, a place of profound significance in the heart of Tokyo. Kaichū Inari Shrine stands as a testament to the enduring power of Inari, the kami of rice, prosperity, and foxes. Located near Shin-Ōkubo Station, this shrine is nestled within the bustling city, offering a spiritual sanctuary amidst the urban landscape. The shrine’s history is intertwined with the legendary metalworkers known as the “Hyakunincho.” In 1533, the shrine was established, becoming a spiritual anchor for these skilled artisans. The name “Kaichū” (meaning “all around” or “in the middle”) evolved as the Hyakunincho settled in the surrounding area, further solidifying the shrine’s connection to this community. Kaichū Inari Shrine is renowned for its association with good fortune, particularly in matters of metalwork. It became a cherished place of worship for the Hyakunincho, who sought Inari’s blessings for success in their craft. Over the centuries, Kaichū Inari Shrine has endured, surviving even the devastation of World War II. While the original buildings were tragically lost, the spirit of the shrine lives on. Today, the shrine continues to attract visitors who seek Inari’s blessings and wish to learn about its rich history. The shrine is actively collecting historical artifacts and information, aiming to restore and preserve the legacy of the Hyakunincho and their close relationship with Inari. Kaichū Inari Shrine is a captivating blend of history and spirituality. It’s a place where the whispers of ancient metalworkers mingle with the rustling leaves, inviting you to connect with the enduring power of Inari.
