Whispers of history surround Crofton. This planned community wasn’t always the thriving suburb it is today. Crofton began in 1964. It was initially a gated community centered around Crofton Parkway. This loop road remains a popular spot for joggers and cyclists. Today all the gates are open. Crofton’s story is one of transformation from a planned community to a vibrant hub.

Crofton’s strategic location between major cities is key to its success. Annapolis Baltimore and Washington DC are all within easy reach. Residents enjoy the amenities of city life while maintaining a peaceful suburban atmosphere. Commuting is convenient thanks to a commuter train line and bus routes connecting to major transportation hubs.

But Crofton’s history stretches far beyond its 1964 founding. Long before planned communities and commuter trains the land held a rich history. The area saw its first European settlers in the 1660s and 1670s. They cleared the land and depended on tobacco farming. The first true road Ridge Road which is now Route 424 linked the area to other settlements. Priest’s Bridge built by Jesuits provided access across the Patuxent River. The arrival of automobiles further elevated Crofton’s importance. Defense Highway Route 450 connected Annapolis and Washington DC solidifying Crofton’s position.

The area boasts significant landmarks. The Katcef Archeological Site features campsites from various periods. Linthicum Walks a 200-year-old property once part of a tobacco plantation saw visits from George Washington himself. White’s Hall birthplace of Johns Hopkins stands as a testament to the area’s enduring legacy.

Crofton also experienced a notable event. In 2002 the discovery of invasive snakehead fish created a national stir. Extensive efforts were undertaken to eliminate this threat. The incident brought national attention to Crofton. It also highlighted the challenges posed by invasive species.

Crofton today is a diverse community. Its growth is reflected in its changing demographics. Its median income has consistently exceeded state and national averages. With its blend of history modern amenities and convenient location Crofton continues to thrive. Crofton is more than just a planned community. It’s a living testament to the ebb and flow of history.
