Established in the 14th century, St. Louis Cemetery is a place of quiet contemplation. St. Louis Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Strasbourg. It’s also the smallest, covering less than a hectare. Within its walls lie not only local residents but also figures of historical significance. For instance, Henri-Auguste François, the malaria specialist and playwright, rests here. You’ll also find the tomb of Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen, a renowned pathologist. Heinrich Ludwig Kayser, the founder of the Neueste Nachrichten (ancestor of the Dernières Nouvelles d’Alsace), is buried at St. Louis Cemetery. He was also the owner of the Kaysersguet estate. The cemetery holds the remains of archaeologist Adolf Michaelis, who founded the classical archaeology chair at Kaiser-Wilhelms-Universität. Publisher Karl Trübner and philologist Johann Heinrich Hubschmann also found their final resting place here. Even the Alsatian poet Ernst Stadler, who wrote in German, is buried within St. Louis Cemetery. Adjacent to this historic cemetery is the private cemetery of the Pourtalès family, adding another layer of history to this tranquil corner of Strasbourg.
