Have you ever heard of a chapel built for a wedding? Right before you stands the Sisi-Kapelle, a small but very beautiful chapel that was built in 1854 to commemorate the wedding of Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. It is located in the Sievering area of Vienna, near the Vienna Woods. It was commissioned by Johann Carl Freiherr von Sothen, who wanted a permanent reminder of the historic event and a final resting place for himself and his wife, Franziska. The Sisi-Kapelle was consecrated to the patron saints of the imperial couple: Saint Elisabeth, Saint Francis of Assisi, and Saint Joseph. The chapel sadly fell into disrepair and neglect during the 20th century. In 2002, the Caucus Wood purchased the chapel and began renovations, which included restoring the interior and adding a glass roof to allow for natural light. After several years of work, the Sisi-Kapelle reopened in 2005, and it is now a popular destination for those interested in the history of the Habsburg dynasty. You can see a glimpse of the love story of the Emperor and Empress in its walls, as well as the enduring spirit of the Viennese people. Today, the Sisi-Kapelle serves as a reminder of a time when love and tradition intertwined.
