Gazing upon Mangan-ji, one can almost hear the whispers of ancient prayers. Mangan-ji, nestled in Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward, emanates a serene aura. This Buddhist temple, also known as Todoroki Fudo, holds a significant place in Japanese history and culture. Mangan-ji stands as the 17th temple on the Bando Sanjusan Fudoson Reijo pilgrimage route. This route encompasses 36 temples dedicated to Fudo Myoo in the Kanto region.

Mangan-ji’s origins trace back to the Heian period. It later served as a chapel for Todoroki Castle, an outlying fortification of Setagaya Castle. During the Tenbun era (1532-1555), the temple was moved to its present location. The Tokugawa shogunate granted Mangan-ji a 13 koku stipend for its upkeep during the Edo period. It was during this time that the temple’s mountain name transitioned from Iozan (Mount Io) to Chikozan (Mount Chiko). Its primary object of worship also shifted from Yakushi Nyorai to Dainichi Nyorai. Interestingly, Mangan-ji gained widespread recognition for its Jizo Bosatsu statue, believed to grant a single wish to each worshipper.

Mangan-ji also houses the grave of Hosoi Kotaku (1658-1736). He was a renowned Edo-period Confucian scholar, calligrapher, and seal carver. His grave was designated a National Historic Site in 1949. Look closely at the inscription above the main gate. It’s in Hosoi Kotaku’s calligraphy, a tangible link to the past. Near Mangan-ji’s original location lies Myoo-in, a subsidiary chapel. Its main object of worship, a Fudo Myoo image, dates back to the Nara period. Legend says the priest Kakuban dreamt he had to enshrine this statue in a water-rich area of Musashi Province. He chose the Todoroki Ravine, with its river and waterfalls. Myoo-in’s current buildings, including the main hall and gate, were relocated from Mangan-ji in 1952 and 1968, respectively.

Mangan-ji offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city. It’s a place where history and spirituality intertwine, offering a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural tapestry. The echoes of ancient chants and whispered prayers still linger within Mangan-ji’s sacred grounds. As you leave Mangan-ji, carry with you a sense of peace. Remember the stories of those who walked these grounds before you.
