Tucked away amidst the bustling streets of Alexandria, Woodlawn Elementary School has witnessed generations of young minds blossom. Woodlawn Elementary isn’t just a school. The school’s name, a nod to the nearby Woodlawn Plantation, evokes images of its namesake’s grand beginnings. In 1799, President George Washington gifted this sprawling estate to his nephew and niece. Little did he know, the name Woodlawn would later grace a humble schoolhouse, echoing the very principles of education championed by the Quakers who settled in the area. These Quakers, ardent believers in public education, established one of the area’s first schools near the very same Woodlawn estate. This early school, a modest structure compared to the grand mansion, laid the foundation for what Woodlawn Elementary is today. The original Woodlawn School, a simple two-room building, stood on the Accotink Turnpike, now known as Route 1. The journey of Woodlawn Elementary is marked by resilience. In 1917, a fire ravaged the schoolhouse. A quick-thinking student’s calm announcement, “The schoolhouse is on fire, we had better get our coats and hats and get out,” likely saved many lives. Soldiers from nearby Fort Belvoir salvaged the children’s desks, and classes resumed at Haddon Hall while the school was rebuilt. The new structure, built upon the old stone foundation, retained its two-room design, heated by the same wood-burning stoves that had caused the fire. The current Woodlawn Elementary School opened in 1938, a brick structure boasting four classrooms, a library, a clinic, and a principal’s office. Its modern amenities, including central heating, marked a significant upgrade from the previous schoolhouse. However, growth continued to outpace capacity, leading to several additions over the years. By 1965, the school’s enrollment peaked at 763 students, a testament to the burgeoning community it served. Two additional schools were built nearby to alleviate the overcrowding, each carrying forward the legacy of Woodlawn’s commitment to education.
