Stadtwald Schwechat

Hidden within Schwechat, a city known for its international airport and bustling industry, lies a tranquil escape: the Stadtwald Schwechat. This urban forest, nestled on the Kellerberg, began as a vision in 2003. The city, wanting to create a green haven for its residents, embarked on a project to transform the landscape. Phase by phase, land was acquired and planted with a diverse array of trees, totaling over 33,000 saplings of 20 different species. Paths were carved through the emerging woodland, inviting walkers and joggers to explore. Spacious meadows were interwoven with the trees, offering open spaces for relaxation and recreation. The Stadtwald Schwechat is more than just trees and paths. It’s a testament to the city’s commitment to its people, a place where the urban and natural worlds intertwine. The project demonstrates a careful balance between creating a thriving ecosystem and providing a space for human enjoyment. Protective fences shield the young trees from hungry deer and rabbits, ensuring their growth. Regular maintenance, particularly in the first three years, keeps invasive weeds at bay, allowing the trees to flourish and eventually form a closed canopy. This careful attention to detail allows the forest to mature and thrive, becoming a sustainable resource for the community. Beyond the new growth, older stands of black pine, some reaching a century in age, add a sense of history to the landscape. These majestic trees, some showing signs of the Diplodia Pinea fungus, are also under the city’s care, undergoing treatment to ensure their continued survival. The Stadtwald Schwechat has become a beloved destination, not only for the tranquility of the forest itself, but for the amenities thoughtfully integrated into the area. A children’s playground echoes with laughter, while a newly constructed path connects the historic wine cellars on Kellerberg, creating a seamless link between existing parking areas and the heart of the forest.
