Here we are in Yau Tsim Mong District. What do neon-drenched streets tell you? This district is packed with night markets. It boasts endless shopping. Yau Tsim Mong is one of Hong Kong’s oldest areas. It is also one of its most diverse.

Yau Tsim Mong is named for its three main neighborhoods. These are Yau Ma Tei, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Mong Kok. The district is among the densest places globally. Around 343000 people live in just 6.5 square kilometers.

However, it wasn’t always like this. In 1860 Kowloon Peninsula had small fishing and farming communities. Britain then acquired it. Today Yau Tsim Mong never sleeps. Temple Street Night Market is open well after midnight. Many bars and restaurants stay open too.

New hotels and shopping malls change the landscape. The shoreline has been extended. Projects like the West Kowloon Cultural District have been created. The vast shopping area is above Kowloon Station.

Yau Tsim Mong encapsulates Hong Kong’s extremes. Chanel and Gucci are near a halal meat market. Tourists buy cosmetics near souvenir stalls. You can buy high, low, and everything between.

Many visitors stay in Yau Tsim Mong. It leaves a deep impression. It’s loud. It’s crowded. It’s sometimes chaotic. But it’s always exciting. This area was once called Yau Ma Tei District. On April 1, 1988, it was renamed Yau Tsim District. This was to clarify that Tsim Sha Tsui wasn’t separate from Yau Ma Tei. In 1994 Yau Tsim District and Mong Kok District merged. They formed the new Yau Tsim Mong District.

Six MTR lines serve Yau Tsim Mong. These are the Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, and Tung Chung lines. Also the East Rail line, Tuen Ma line, and the Airport Express. The Tsuen Wan and Kwun Tong lines meet at Prince Edward station. They pass Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei. The Tung Chung line has stations near Jordan and Olympic. The East Rail line has a station in Mong Kok East. The Tuen Ma line converges at Austin station.

Remember Yau Tsim Mong’s history. Enjoy its vibrant present. Savor its unique blend of cultures. This is a district of contrasts. It is a place where old meets new. It is a place where East meets West. It is a place that truly embodies the spirit of Hong Kong.
