Deep within the rural countryside, there is a hidden gem. Today, we explore Ho Pui Reservoir. It offers arresting waterscapes and remarkable biodiversity. Ho Pui Reservoir is perfect for those who want an easy stroll.

Ho Pui Reservoir was built in 1961. It serves the irrigation needs of nearby farmlands. The reservoir is small. Yet it is packed with unique scenic features. It gives its larger neighbors a run for their money.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department agrees. It previously named Ho Pui Reservoir as one of the top 10 countryside sights in Hong Kong. From the emerald waters to bamboo groves, this place offers a zen experience. The 157-metre-long S-shaped dam stretches across the northern side of the reservoir.

The loop trail around the reservoir is called a family walk. It is merely two kilometers long. The path is flat and well-paved. Even those with little hiking experience can enjoy it. The hardest part might be getting to the trailhead.

The reservoir is tucked away in Tai Lam Country Park. It takes a bit of a trek to get to it. That’s a big reason why the trail stays pretty quiet. The entire journey is just under five kilometers. It can be completed in around two hours.

We start this hike from Ho Pui Village. There is only one minibus going to Ho Pui Village. You can take it from Kam Sheung Road Station Public Transport Interchange. Ho Pui Village is the final destination of the route.

From Kam Sheung Road, prepare to work up a sweat. Walk straight through the village along Ho Pui Tsuen Road. Walk for 15 to 20 minutes until you reach Ho Pui Campsite.

You’ll be climbing uphill. But the gravel road is wide. The incline is gradual. You will see views of the Kam Tin and Kai Kung Leng.

Upon approaching the campsite, you will meet a junction. A right turn leads to the reservoir. Follow the concrete path for another 0.7 kilometers. You will arrive at a roundabout right beside the Ho Pui Reservoir. This marks the starting point of the family trail.

Coming up to the roundabout, you will pass by an organic farm. A quick visit into the farm is worthwhile. The anti-clockwise walk around the reservoir is flat. It is largely shaded. This makes for a pleasant amble all year round.

The scenery changes at every bend. In some sections, you are offered views of the tranquil waters. In others, you are immersed in woodland. Along the trail, you will see little streams and waterfalls. You may see a mystical bamboo forest tunnel.

Dense thickets of bamboo flank both sides of the dirt path. This stretch of the hike looks like the Arashiyama bamboo grove in Kyoto. Those who visit during late autumn or winter will see silvergrass fields.

The biggest reward of the hike comes at the end. The S-shaped dam is in the last section. Walking along the curved structure gives you views of the entire reservoir.

On a windless day, you’ll see the waters holding the reflection of trees. Look down on either side. Admire the dam’s architecture. Overflowing water cascades down the sloped spillways.

Once you get to the other end of the dam, you are back at the roundabout. To leave, take the concrete path back to Ho Pui Village. Go downhill. You can explore the village. Soak in the peaceful atmosphere. Or take minibus 71 back to Yuen Long.
