“Sä-by” meaning the village by the lake echoes through time here at Säby Gård. This estate whispers tales from as far back as 1408. Today Säby Gård stands as a testament to Swedish agricultural history.
Säby Gård is more than just a farm. It is a family legacy. Since 1952, the Windahl family has cultivated this land. Holger Windahl started the tradition. In 1967, Lennart Windahl took over. Since 2002, Mikael Windahl has been at the helm, representing the third generation. He runs the farm together with his partner Åsa.
Currently, Säby Gård cultivates approximately 420 hectares of land. Besides Säby, they also farm in Gustavsberg, Hemmesta, Kalvandö, Siggesta, Norrnäs and Sunds Gårdar.
Let me tell you about their crops. Säby Gård primarily focuses on grain cultivation. They also sell animal feed. You can find oats, crushed barley, and silage here. They even accept horse manure to enrich their fields. Each September locals flock here for their popular potato self-picking event.
But there is another venture that began in 2012. Säby Gård established its own rapeseed press. For years, they grew rapeseed but sold it. Now, they produce their own cold-pressed rapeseed oil. This oil comes exclusively from rapeseed grown in Värmdö and Ingarö. It’s a genuine Swedish small-scale food craft. They are very proud to be part of the whole process.
Step inside the self-service farm shop. It is open from 10 AM to 8 PM every day. Here, you can purchase seasonal produce such as potatoes, rhubarb, cucumbers, tomatoes, and chili peppers. All year round, you will find their cold-pressed rapeseed oil, gift bags, and apple juice.
Do you see those sunflowers over there? You can pick your own sunflowers just outside the farm shop.
