“Befreiung” – this is the name of the sculpture we stand before. It means “liberation” in German. Werner Friedrich Kunz created this piece in 1992. This powerful bronze sculpture, a little over a meter tall and almost 100 kg, is part of the Zuercher Kunstweg, a series of sculptures scattered across the city. This piece is a testament to the human struggle and achievement of freedom. The figure, stripped down to its bare essence, reaches high into the sky with a defiant movement, almost demanding liberation. The figure’s outstretched arms and powerful stance communicate courage and resilience, symbols of a yearning for freedom. The sculpture’s stark simplicity, its rough, unpolished texture, and the natural patina that has developed over the years, it all contributes to the sense of authenticity and enduring power that emanates from the sculpture. The artist’s decision to use the image of a human form, his choice of material and his approach to the sculptor’s form, are all meant to be understood as a message, a dedication to the human spirit, its fight and its potential. The sculpture is meant to evoke a range of thoughts, feelings, and memories. It’s open to interpretation, with a complex meaning that resonates on different levels. Take a moment to analyze its forms and try to grasp its complexity: What emotions does it evoke in you? What stories resonate with you?
