A chilling wind whispers through the narrow entrance. Welcome to Kleine Berlin. This isn’t your typical tourist attraction. It’s a tangible echo of World War II. Right here in the heart of Trieste. These tunnels weren’t just shelters they were a secret world.

Imagine the fear. Imagine the sounds of bombs exploding above. Now picture hundreds of people seeking refuge in this network of tunnels. Kleine Berlin served as a massive air-raid shelter. It was built during the German occupation of Trieste. The complex consists of two distinct sections. An Italian-built area and a German-built section.

The Italian section was simpler. A network of tunnels with wooden benches. A makeshift first-aid room and basic toilets. Civilians brought their own stools to sit on. But the German section. That was a different story. It was larger. Better equipped. And reserved exclusively for German soldiers and officials. SS-Gruppenführer Odilo Globocnik. He used it to travel secretly between his home and offices in the nearby courthouse. A secret passage. A testament to the power and secrecy the Nazis sought to maintain.

The Germans were meticulous. The tunnels had multiple entrances. They even used braziers to dry the damp air. However this caused dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. It seeped into the civilian section causing serious health risks. A tragic consequence of war.

On April 29 1945 Globocnik and other Nazi officials fled Trieste. The next day an insurrection broke out. Yugoslav partisan troops entered the city. They surrounded the last German strongholds. Including the courthouse connected to Kleine Berlin. Yet they never found this secret passage. It remained a hidden secret until later discovered.

The fighting didn’t last long. The German soldiers surrendered. Twenty months of occupation ended. Kleine Berlin fell silent. Today. It serves as a chilling reminder of the past. A place where history whispers through the darkness. It remains a significant piece of Trieste’s history. A testament to the resilience of its people. A reminder of the horrors of war. And a window into a world long forgotten. But not gone.
