Whispers of the past linger in South Granville. They speak of a time long before the clatter of trains and the hum of industry. South Granville sits nestled between Granville and Auburn. It’s a place where history quietly unfolds.

Originally part of the vast Drainville Estate this area was transformed by the arrival of the railway in 1855. Before that the land was mostly bushland. It was a source of timber for early settlers. They used it to fuel steam engines. Later scavengers collected firewood from the remaining trees. Tanners used wattle bark. Others used stringybark for roofing.

The name Parramatta Junction stuck for a time. This was because the first railway line in New South Wales ended here. But in 1880 a public meeting chose a new name. They chose Granville to honour the British Foreign Secretary Earl Granville. Some objected to the name saying it was too French. Their protests were ignored.

At that time South Granville boasted a population of 372. Farmers and fruit growers eventually discovered limitations of the soil. Flying foxes caused problems. Dairy cattle became the best use for the grasslands.

The Granville Municipality was established in 1885. It lasted until 1948 when it became part of a larger City of Parramatta. A major flood in 1974 caused significant damage. Torrential rain overwhelmed the Duck Creek stormwater channel. The Granville RSL was damaged losing many photographs.

South Granville’s story isn’t just about the past. It’s a vibrant place today. It’s a mix of homes apartments and businesses. The area has continued to grow and change. Census data shows a diverse community reflecting a rich tapestry of cultures and backgrounds. Many residents were born outside Australia. Many languages are spoken here. The heritage of South Granville continues to evolve as it moves into the future. Remember the quiet whispers of South Granville’s past. They form a vital part of its ongoing story.
